Frazz - small growth inside mouth on lower jaw

Not seen this before but I have a small koi (35 cms) with what looks like a small human wart inside it's mouth. Another way to describe the lump would be that it looks like the top off a food pellet.

There is no evidence of any bleeding or soreness. The koi is eating and in a quarantine pond heated at a temp of 14 degrees. Difficult to take a photo.

Anyone any ideas or has come across something similar.

The pond is relatively new and filters are now working OK, parameters have been fine for the last 5 weeks but this koi has been through a small nitrite spike over a two week period which ended 5 weeks ago.

Many thanks in anticipation.

nickc - Kohaku advice required

Has anyone come across any good links covering what to look for in a Kohaku? Preferably aimed at the novice, I have picked one out which I really like and think to be a great example of the variety, at a very fair price , however before committing myself wanted to read up a bit, the book I thought would help me has gone straight over my head, with sentences like,” one should make sure that the bu has not been forced too quickly, to boost the sale price, as this can greatly affect the dan especially on the Ippon” what in heaven’s name is that all about? After half an hour of reading this rubbish I am more confused than what I was when I started. On the brighter side, I am maybe going into it, too deep and starting to get a bit too fussy, cause I am sure if I buy it, once it has a name and I have brought its character out, I will be happy with it.. regards Nick

I want to heat our new fish house area to eliminate condensation and could do it two ways both fairly cheap to run which are:

1: Put 1 or 2 large double rads running on the pond heating return so warming the room every time the pond calls for heat (very often at the mo) which altho free heat has no control or

2: Put in a log burner and burn wood collected free so free heat but no real control.

Anyone tried or using a log burner?

Decisions decisions.

Hi.

I'm going to treat myself to a really nice kohaku this spring, but am determined to try and avoid the dreaded shimis. Nearly every kohaku I have has developed one. So this question goes to the people who manage to keep kohakus shimi free to try and get a feel of where I'm going wrong, and what I need to do to stop my new one getting any.

My water is of a medium hardness (forget the exact measurement now). Is this alone enough to cause shimis? Is it really worth trying to soften it?

I clean my filters twice a week, which gives about a 15% weekly water change. Is 15% enough?

Water params have been spot on for the last two years (in fact during the last year I only did occasional ckecks because a) when tested, everything was very good, and b) the fish are very happy and very hungry).

Do different bloodlines / breeders seem more resistant to shimis?

Heres hoping. Thanks for any thoughts.
